Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) is a theory developed by John Sweller and explains the role of short-term memory in the learning process.
According to Sweller’s studies, short-term memory is very limited. Studies claim that it is capable of receiving between 5 and 9 new pieces of information at the same time. These are held for 15/30 seconds, depending on the complexity of the information, waiting to be transferred to long-term memory. Any extra information will be directly discarded without being processed.
