Productivity Debt

Core Idea:

Many people begin their day with a sense of ‘productivity debt’, spending the entire day trying to pay off this debt in the hope of reaching a zero balance by day’s end. This leads to stress, exhaustion, and often social isolation.

Psychological Background:

This feeling is common among ‘insecure overachievers’, who are driven by a sense of inadequacy. They link their self-worth to achievements, social status, income, or the idea that they must realize their potential.

Byung-Chul Han’s Insight:

We produce to compensate for an inner sense of lack, leading to a constant state of activity to justify ourselves as full members of society. This insight comes from the book The Burnout Society.

Problem: This ‘debt’ turns success into a punishment, as every achievement sets a new, higher bar that must be reached next time. Consequently, there is never rest or satisfaction.

Impact: This mindset causes anxiety and exhaustion, and reduces the space for relaxation and relationships, as ‘unproductive’ activities like social interaction are deemed less important.
